Tomboy

"Tomboy" is an unreleased song written and produced by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson intended for the Bad album.

Background[]

"Tomboy" was co-written with John Barnes, co-produced with Bill Bottrell, and recorded between October 22, 1985-January 22, 1986 at Hayvenhurst for Bad. Unfortunately however, it didn't make the final cut.^[1]^[2]

“	Jackson worked on "Tomboy" with Bill Bottrell and John Barnes in the fall of 1985. Barnes has said he wasn't a fan of it, but Jackson loved it. The artist reached out to Roger Troutman from the innovative band Zapp to develop the track. The song features a funky guitar riff and bright production, but didn't get developed much beyond 1985.	”

On October 16, 2022, Damien Shields gave away some info on what he heard of "Tomboy" as well, through the X social media platform.

“	Tomboy, I don't know. I heard a version at the US Copyright Office, but the version I heard was instrumental. It had a VERY "Captain EO" vibe to it, and a melody line in the music strikingly similar to (basically the same as) the "I bet you remember" line in Remember The Time.	”

"Tomboy" is described as a classic mid-'80s track, complete with synthesizer drums, lovely strings, a nice guitar riff, and slap bass reminiscent of the Captain EO soundtrack. It also features a subtle 'ba-da-ba-da-bab-bab' melody which is almost identical to the 'I bet you remember' line in "Remember the Time" from Michael's Dangerous album.

“	Roger played well on Tomboy, but the song was just okay, in my opinion. Michael liked it, but it didn't hold up in comparison to the other music that was available for 'Bad'.	”

On February 6, 2024, Joe Vogel confirmed Michael recorded complete vocals for "Tomboy".^[5]
