Thomas Arthur Mesereau Jr. (born July 1, 1950) is an American attorney who defended Michael Jackson during the People v. Jackson trial.
Relation to Jackson
Mesereau was recommended to Jackson by Johnnie Cochran, who represented Jackson through earlier accusations. On February 28, 2005, the People v. Jackson trial began, with Meserau leading the defense to Jackson. The case involved allegations from Gavin Arvizo, a young boy who accused Jackson of molestation, which allegedly took place at his Neverland Ranch.[1]
Mesereau's strategy was to cross-examine the prosecution's witnesses, and then challenge the credibility of key accusers, pointing out the flaws in the accusers' claims. His aggresive defense approach eventually led to Jackson being accuited of all 14 charges in June 2005.[2]
When Jackson's funeral was held on September 3, 2009, three months after he had died, Mesereau was among the many who had attented his funeral. When the Leaving Neverland fiasco in 2019 happened, Mesereau defended Jackson, proving his innoence. In 2021, he had replaced Howard Weitzman as one of the key lawyers at the legal team for the Michael Jackson Estate' They joined forces in time to go to court against HBO and the director, Dan Reed.[3]
