Sheryl Suzanne Crow is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. She joined Michael Jackson on stage during the Bad World Tour between 1987 and 1989. Crow would perform to "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel" alongside the King of Pop.

Bad World Tour[]

Audition[]

Crow auditioned for the Bad World Tour in 1987 at the age of 25.

Hi Michael, my name is Sheryl Crow and I just moved here. I’m a former music teacher and I would love to go on the road with you.

–Sheryl Crow[1]

On tour[]

Sheryl first performed at the September 12, 1987 show of the Bad World Tour, at the Korakuen stadium in Tokyo. She explained, that her time at the tour was the happiest she's ever been.

I was in my mid-20s. I hadn’t released any records. I didn’t even own a passport when I landed the job. And there I was, travelling the world with the biggest pop star on the planet. Walking out in front of full stadiums every night was exhilarating enough. To be performing alongside Jackson was something else altogether. Seeing him dance a few feet away from me was an other-worldly experience. It was the happiest of times.

–Sheryl Crow for Daily Mail, "Sheryl Crow on being Michael Jackson's backing singer on his Bad tour"[2]

Alongside Jackson, Crow got to perform to "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and to "The Way You Make Me Feel", replacing Tatiana Thumbtzen who previously got fired after her incident with kissing Michael on stage.

Behind the scenes[]

During the tour, tabloids started spreading, that Jackson was crushing over Crow. In her 2020 book, Words + Music, the singer stated she believes it was planted by Frank DiLeo (Jackson's manager) to make Michael look more attracted to women.

In the book, Crow also detailed treatment towards her from DiLeo, who she stated sexually harrassed her for very long time. According to her, the manager threatened Sheryl that if she told anyone, he would ensure her career fails. After the tour came to an end in 1989, Sheryl returned to her Los Angeles apartment and fell into a long period of depression.

You move to LA thinking you’ve done all your homework. You’ve practised your whole life, you’ve listened to the greatest artists, you’ve played in coffee bars, and then you get out there and you learn: ‘Okay, this is how the music industry works: a corporation buys so many records. It puts you in the top 10. We take your publishing.’ It was disillusioning. I think when your dream bubble is burst you either go: ‘Okay, well, I’m going to forget that dream,’ or you do what I did, which was wallow in it for about a year, and then you pull your bootstraps up and you get back to work.

–Sheryl Crow[3]

Career[]

In 1993, Sheryl met with a group of musicians at Bill Bottrell's studio. Bottrell agreed to help produce a solo record for her, Tuesday Night Music Club. She became a successful, Grammy award winning artist, currently having released eleven studio albums and selling 50 million albums worldwide.

Crow talked about how two songs of hers were written in reference to the harrassement: "What I Can Do for You" and "The Na-Na Song".
