Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson is an American model, singer, songwriter and actor. She is the second child and only daughter of pop artist Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe.

Jackson began aiming for major career achievements starting in 2017, appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone, and debuting as a model and an actor, mainly in television. In 2018 Paris, alongside musician/singer Gabriel Glenn formed an indie folk duo, titled The Soundflowers. The two released an EP in 2020, which included "Notes on a Ghost", a Best Music award winning song at the 2021 Top Indie Film Awards. As the duo disbanded soon after the record released, Paris signed to Republic Records, thanks to which she currently has a full length album wilted, the lost ep, a bunch of non-album singles and collaborations on her account.

Biography

1998-2009: Early life

Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson was born on April 3, 1998, in Beverly Hills, California. She is the only daughter of Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe. She has one older brother, Prince, and one younger half-brother, Bigi. Jackson was allegedly named after the French city she was conceived in and both her father and paternal grandmother. Jackson was raised solely by her father, who received full custody rights following his divorce in 1999, although Rowe had stated it was her intention and agreed upon with Michael that he would raise and have custody of the children. She grew up at Neverland Ranch with her siblings. Her father made longtime friends and actors Elizabeth Taylor and Macaulay Culkin, the godparents of Jackson and her brother Prince.

On public outings with their father, Prince and Paris' faces were always obscured from the public and media.

During her childhood, she and her siblings often wore masks during public outings with their father to hide their faces from the public. In an interview, her mother Debbie Rowe revealed that she was the one who had come up with the idea of her children hiding their faces. Rowe also said that this precaution was taken as she used to receive kidnap threats when Prince and Paris were babies.

She made her first television appearance in the documentary, Living with Michael Jackson alongside her father and her brothers, although her and her brothers' faces were never shown. She was also portrayed by Brooklynn Proulx in the 2004 television biopic Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story.

On June 25, 2009 Jackson's father Michael died at his rented mansion. On July 7, at her father's memorial service at the Staples Center, Jackson spoke through tears for the very first time about her father with her family onstage, in which she said, "I just want to say...Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just want to say I love him... so much."

2009-2015: Personal life

Following her father's death, Paris' grandmother Katherine was made the permanent guardian of her and her brothers, while Rowe obtained visitation rights. In 2010, Jackson would be enrolled in Buckley School, along with Prince, and she'd be an active part in school, participating in a variety school sports. In 2013, she left the school.

In 2010, Jackson and her brothers gave an interview for Oprah Winfrey alongside their grandmother Katherine and their cousins about life after her father's death. She and Prince also accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 Grammy Awards on their father's behalf.

In May of 2012, Jackson made People Magazine's Most Beautiful list. In June, Paris made a guest appearance on the Oprah Winfrey series Next Chapter, where she discussed her father, her childhood and her experience as a victim of cyberbullying. In the same year, as Jackson revealed five years later in an issue of the Rolling Stone magazine, she was sexually assaulted by a “complete stranger”.[1] Additionally, she struggled with self-hatred and low self-esteem. These culminated in Paris battling with drug addiction and depression.[1] On June 5, 2013, Jackson attempted suicide by reportedly swallowing 20 Motrin PM pills and cutting her wrist with a kitchen knife, leaving behind a suicide note. Following her suicide attempt, Paris had been recovering at the therapeutic boarding school, Alpine Academy, in Utah. In 2020, Jackson had revealed attending the school subjected her and other students to further abuse.[2]

In the following years, Paris began to heal, claiming "I’m [Jackson] a completely different person".[1] In 2015, she began dating Chester Castellaw. The pair made a couple public appearances overtime, but split by the end of the year. Between 2016 and 2017, Paris dated Michael Snoddy; a drummer of Street Drum Corps.

Jackson has also been open about her sexuality for years, stating she came out at the age of 14, and later mentioning it through social media and on stage.[3] During a 2021 episode of the Red Table Talk co-hosted by Paris' friend, Willow Smith, she revealed the artist is "still kind of figuring it out", and that the Jackson family being "very religious" affected her openness to them about the topic.[4]

In 2017, Jackson became a model and an actor, now starring in television shows and movies, whether it's as a cameo or a lead role. In the following year, alongside Gabriel Glenn she founded a musical duo; The Soundflowers.

In January 2019, Paris reportedly checked into a treatment facility to seek further improvement of her physical and emotional health.[5] Soon after, the release of Leaving Neverland took place, which led to a false report from TMZ claiming Paris was hospitalized after yet again attempting suicide. Jackson responded on her X account with "fuck you you fucking liars".[6]

Paris started to make more public appearances overtime, occasionaly showing up at talk shows or award shows, including Grammy Awards, Tony Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Oscars or the Golden Globes.

In 2020, The Soundflowers released an EP, but broke up soon after. Jackson signed a record deal with Republic Records, leading to her becoming a solo artist and making multiple releases since October 2020.

In 2010s, Jackson began to get involved in films and acting. Starting off, in 2011, Jackson signed on to star in the film the children's fantasy film Lundon's Bridge and the Three Keys, a story adapted from a book written by Dennis Christen. Ultimately, the film was not produced. Paris and her siblings were mentioned in her aunt La Toya's 2011 autobiography, Starting Over.

Early in the decade, Paris, alongside her two siblings and her grandmother Katherine made plans to put together a now-cancelled documentary film entitled Remembering Our Michael in remembrance of her deceased father. In a sneak peek of the documentary (shot before Jackson's suicide attempt), she remarked that her father had promised to teach her and her brother, Prince his famous dance move, the Moonwalk, but never had gotten the chance.

In 2018, Paris and Gabriel Glenn created a musical duo, The Soundflowers. In June 2020, they released a self-titled EP; The Soundflowers. The duo split in August, which led to Jackson pursuing a solo career. She signed to Republic Records and in October, she released her first single, "let down", and only a month later her debut, alternative, concept album titled wilted came out. Produced by Andy Hull, the record received mixed reviews, usually being rated 3/5 to 4/5. Ever since the release, Paris has released a couple of non-album singles and the lost ep. The most recent songs have strayed away from alternative music, now exploring 1990s grunge-rock.

Jackson has also been performing live every once in a while, with her first gig taking place on June 23, 2018 while still being a part of The Soundflowers.[9]

Controversies

Similarly to her siblings, Jackson has constantly been criticized, mainly by online users, for her race. She'd speak up she's multiracial, adding that Michael "immersed her in African-American culture", and that she considers herself Black.

"He would look me in the eyes and he'd point his finger at me and he'd be like, 'You're black. Be proud of your roots.' And I'd be like, 'Okay, he's my dad, why would he lie to me?'"
— Paris Jackson[10]

In 2016, Jackson used to also be judged by online users for her newly gotten tattoos. On the subject, Paris has said;

"The craftsmanship of tattoos will always be a controversy. some people like them, some people absolutely hate them. I appreciate art, I always have. especially when that art means something to me. [...] Today I can look at my inner forearms and see art that has meaning for me, I don’t see a dark past anymore. my scars… of self-hatred have been covered by loving marks, creativity, ingenuity… and depth."
— Paris Jackson[11]

Amidst the October 2023 attacks on Israel, Jackson had come out on her Instagram story to reveal she's Jewish and supports Israel. The statement gathered controversy among Jackson's fans, who criticized her, with some even pointing out it's "funny" as her father supported Palestine.

"I'm Jewish, I'm scared, and I won't be silent. I stand with Israel."

Trivia

  • Paris' first concert was High School Musical: The Concert which Michael took her to between 2006 and 2007. Backstage, Michael and Paris met the cast members and Kenny Ortega.[13]
  • Paris doesn't exactly celebrate Michael's birthday. Jackson recalled her father hating "anybody acknowledging his birthday, wishing him a happy birthday, celebrating it, nothing like that", which his daughter decided to respect. Additionally, he kept the date of his birthday a secret from his children, as he didn't want them to throw a surprise birthday party.[14]
