Graham King stated "There are biopics, and then there's Michael Jackson." The co-owner of DiscussingFilm shared exact details of what was shown in the trailer.[47]
| “ | [...] The footage covers all of the iconic eras from Jackson’s career, starting with his humble beginnings in The Jackson 5 with the hit song ‘ABC’ playing in the background. We then see a montage that goes from the Jackson 5 performing on television to Michael Jackson in his ‘Thriller’ era. We see Michael’s iconic white socks and black shoes as he’s dancing while singing ‘Bad’. Fans will be excited to know Jaafar Jackson sounds just like his uncle, nailing all the vocal cadences, when delivering dialogue. Michael Jackson is then shown, in the late stages of his career after one of his accidents, with visible pale skin, long curly hair, a black fedora, face mask, and sunglasses getting flanked by security. He’s walking towards a car while a crazy crowd of rabid fans and paparazzi scream to get a photo, with some people even jumping on his car to get a glimpse at him. Cut back to his youth when Michael’s mom tells him, as she’s wiping a tear off his face, “You were never like everyone else.” We then get a close-up of Michael’s fingers snapping, performing ‘Man in the Mirror’ to a massive concert crowd. We also get quick shots of a young Michael signing thriller records with his short hair and iconic red jacket. Then there’s a glimpse of Michael with his face wrapped up in gauze on a stretcher being led into a hospital — assuming this is the big Pepsi commercial incident. The trailer directly confirms that this biopic will address “the controversy” of Jackson’s career. The next image is of Michael on a balcony, which could be the baby dangling incident. There’s a quick shot of Michael sitting at a piano and taking a pill. We see quick glimpses of Nia Long and Coleman Domingo as Michael’s parents in his youth. The trailer ends with a shot of Michael in the white shirt/black pants combo performing in front of hundreds of fans. Jaafar Jackson nails all of the dancing in the footage shown and is seen in various layers of makeup as the film traverses the different stages of Michael’s life. | ” |
–Andrew J. Salazar, "CinemaCon 2024: Every New Lionsgate Announcement"[48] | ||

On October 29, Universal Pictures revealed Michael would get a major marketing campaign with unprecedented promotion and investments as they expect a multi-billion dollar box office. The studio says it is confident that Michael, produced for $155 million, will surpass the $1 billion mark.[77]
On November 5, the film was delayed to October 3, 2025.[78] It's unconfirmed as to what caused the delay, but it was rumored the studio was "scared off" by supposed threats from an unknown source about coming out with false allegations (speculated to be the Cascio family). On January 24, 2025, rumors emerged from reporter Matthew Belloni, alleging that any production on the film had been halted due to its depiction of the case involving then-13-year-old Jordan Chandler. Belloni claimed that the film’s third act “hinges specifically on the impact of the Chandler circus” and suggested that the ending would need to be rewritten and re-shot. Additionally, it was reported that the Michael Jackson Estate may have overlooked a prior agreement with the Chandler family prohibiting their inclusion in any cinematic portrayal.[79] These claims sparked significant online debate, with many questioning Belloni’s narrative. Critics pointed out that his assertion of having read the film’s script had been debunked and highlighted his alleged ties to Dan Reed, director of Leaving Neverland. This association led some to scrutinize Belloni’s credibility and motivations in reporting on the matter.[80] Representatives for the Michael Jackson Estate and Lionsgate responded to the circulating reports, firmly denying claims of turmoil surrounding the production. In a joint statement, they debunked these claims, stating the biopic is "progressing as planned, with reshoots scheduled to take place in March.”[81]
On April 1, it was stated at CinemaCon news regarding the film would come within the upcoming weeks.[82] The following day, Deadline reported Michael could be delayed until 2026, and potentially released in two parts due to the film's four-hour runtime. Additionally, legal concerns regarding the portrayal of Evan Chandler were cited as a contributing factor.[83] This is not yet confirmed but is one of the options currently under consideration by the team. President of the Lionsgate Film Group, Adam Fogelson would respond:
| “ | Ever since we debuted some early Michael footage at CinemaCon last year, it’s been crystal clear how much global interest and enthusiasm there is. Much has happened since, and while we aren’t quite ready to share more, we’re going to have some very big and exciting things to say in the coming weeks. So be patient, and stay tuned. | ” |

Trivia
- Michael will be the first theatrical biographical film about Michael Jackson.
- It isn't the first biopic about him however, as a couple other televised movies came out before: Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story (2004) and Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland (2017). The former was heavily criticized by the general public and the artist himself, while the latter was received much better, although still didn't gain the most positive reviews. It is also worth mentioning a half documentary half biopic came out as well, Michael Jackson: Man in the Mirror (2017), and in 1992 a show regarding the history of The Jacksons came out, The Jacksons: An American Dream.
- Michael is the first and only biographical movie about the singer, where the Jackson family members helped with creating it.
- The biopic is set to be Lionsgate's biggest movie ever.[102]
- John Campea who saw an early draft of the movie's trailer, mentioned it had an "Oscar feel to it", and a lot of Jackson's songs were featured.[103]
- It is rumored, that over 30 songs are set to appear in the film.
- During his lifetime, Jackson was very against having a white actor to portray him in movies, commercials etc.[104]
- According to actor Joseph David Jones, who portrays Jermaine, the film's soundtrack features a blend of original Michael Jackson songs alongside re-recordings by Jaafar Jackson and the rest of the cast.[105]
- On February 14, 2024, on Jaafar's streaming profiles a new song, titled "Rebirth of Michael" appeared.[106] The recording was speculated to be a part of the film's promo, but was removed shortly after, as it turned out to be an unofficial release of an old demo, and had nothing to do with Michael.[107][108]
- On March 10 and 12, supposed "new" photos were leaked of Jaafar as Michael in his later years by X user, @jjj4master. These were soon deleted as they were later revealed to have been made using generative AI.[109][110][111]
