"Make or Break" is an unreleased song by Michael Jackson intended for the Bad and Dangerous albums.
Background[]
The song was first acknowledged by the artist himself during the Mexico deposition in November 1993.[1] According to John Barnes, it was predated by another unreleased track, "Alright Now", and according to Bill Bottrell it was made in December 1985.
“ | He did a reference vocal, a background vocal, and a reference bridge, It had an opportunity to be innovative but we didn't really push it because other tracks took priority. | ” |
–John Barnes on the song[2] |
“ | Very driving, terrific hook, but never got finished. | ” |
–Matt Forger on the song[2] |
“ | I remember "Make or Break" at Hayvenhurst. Probably Dec. '85. | ” |

“ | “Make or Break” was a song written by Michael and myself. We never really finished it. There is an incomplete voice demo. There is also some lyrics. This was the third piece I created with the Synclavier. I think it has potential as a song. He didn't get into Bad." | ” |
–John Barnes, Facebook, 2016 |
Despite of what Barnes stated however, on February 6, 2024, Joe Vogel claimed Jackson did infact complete vocals for "Make or Break".[3] Bottrell also mentioned the song was being worked on during Dangerous sessions at Record One.
“ | [...] Just some fiddling. It wasn't very good. | ” |
