Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson is a documentary film directed by Dan Reed, aired on UK's Channel 4 on March 18, 2025. It is a follow-up to 2019's Leaving Neverland, and details Wade Robson and James Safechuck "seeking justice" after coming out with their child sexual abuse allegations against American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson. Unlike its predecessor, the film was not distributed by HBO.

The film is the second in what has been described as the soon to be "Leaving Neverland trilogy", as the third documentary is reportedly set to be released in the near future, focusing on Robson and Safechuck's upcoming trial against Jackson's companies.[1]

Synopsis

Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson captures the attempt by Safechuck, Robson and their legal representatives to seek justice for what happened. The hour-long film will detail the personal toll of going public with their accusations and the backlash from Jackson’s global army of fans.

With exclusive access to hearings, Channel 4 said the film will show the extent to which MJJ Productions and MJJ Ventures fought to prevent James and Wade from having their day in court.

Background

Main article: Leaving Neverland

The previous collaboration between Reed, Robson and Safechuck had a major impact on the media's view on Michael Jackson, causing many to turn against the artist in the following months. The general public had very mixed opinions on the topic however, and it was quickly concluded the accusers' claims are untrue, as they condradict many facts and provide little to no actual proof to go with them.

Robson and Safechuck tried going to court against Michael's companies as well, but failed on multiple occasions. In 2023, they were allowed to go to trial with their case by a Californian jury however.[3] Reed began working on the film in said year as well. He began reaching out to fans to sweettalk them into joining the project.[4] Reed also "begged" MJJ Productions to cooperate, but they declined. The film's release was confirmed by Variety and Deadline on February 20, 2025.[5][2]

Reception

The film received 3/5 reviews after its initial airing. Jack Seale of The Guardian states it "struggles to deal with how comprehensive the old one was" and is "left with the somewhat dry legal battle". He also criticizes the absence of Jackson's productions' side of the case.[6]

Unlike its predecessor, Surviving Michael Jackson also made very little noise within the general public. This may be due to very little promo it received, especially considering the lack of HBO's involvement (or other major company's in the likes of it).

Contradictions

As pointed out by Jackson's fans around the world, the accusations presented in the film can be easily debunked.

Claim Who Contradiction
Michael begged Robson to testify despite Robson wishing not to testify. Robson Robson himself stated in the previous documentary the reason he testified was because he didn't realize that what he went through was abuse.[7]
