"In the Closet" is a song by Michael Jackson released as the third track from the Dangerous album. It was released as a single on April 9, 1992, serving as the third single from the album. Princess Stephanie of Monaco is featured during spoken parts of the song.
Background[]
"In the Closet" was made with Teddy Riley and recorded between March-May 1991. Despite the suggestive title, the track was written about a concealed relationship. Initially, Madonna was planned to be featured in the song, likely in place of Princess Stephanie. Reportedly, after writing down lyrics for her parts and showing them to the King of Pop, he said they were too provocative and the project was scrapped.
Music video[]
The music video was directed by Herb Ritts and released on April 23, 1992. It was shot in sepia and takes place in Salton Sea, California. In the clip, Princess Stephanie's parts are replaced by Naomi Campbell who performs sensual dance routines alongside Jackson.
Live performances[]
During the Dangerous World Tour, Michael's band performed the instrumental to the first half of "In the Closet" as an interlude between "Heal the World" and "Man in the Mirror".
"In the Closet" was properly performed only during the HIStory World Tour. It was featured as a part of the tour opener, that being the "Scream"/"They Don't Care About Us" / "In the Closet" medley.

A demo of "In the Closet" was leaked alongside the rest of a DAT filled with early Dangerous mixes on December 2002. This version doesn't feature anyone but Michael, who records scratch lyrics over what would later be performed by Princess Stephanie.
