"I Have This Dream" is an unreleased song written and produced by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson intended for the Invincible album, and later intended to be released as a charity single alongside The All-Stars supergroup. The 1999 instrumental provided for a 2002 contest held by AOL Instant Messenger and Tonos Entertainment leaked online on April 16, 2010.[1] ( listen)
Background[]
"I Have This Dream" was first acknowledged and confirmed by Jackson during a 1999 interview with TV Guide.
“ | There’s a song on the new album called “I Have This Dream”. It’s a millennium song about the world and the environment that I cowrote with Carol Bayer Sager and David Foster. | ” |
It was first recorded in April 1999 for Invincible, although it didn't make the final selection for the album. It'd be later repurposed in 2002 into the topic of a contest held by AOL Instant Messenger. The contest members would write lyrics for the song, and the King of Pop would later record whichever would win.[1] On August 29, 2002, a writer named Ric Kipp eventually won the whole contest.[4]

Michael Jackson recording "I Have This Dream" at The Metropolis Studios in London (October 7, 2005)
"I Have This Dream" was worked on again in August 2005, with new and reformed All-Stars: Ciara, Snoop Dogg, James Ingram, Jermaine Jackson, Shirley Caesar, the O’Jays, and R. Kelly. Jackson wanted to remove the latter from the song, likely due to the heavy accusations against Kelly years prior.[5][6] John Barnes also reunited with Michael in the studio to contribute an orchestral arrangement and keys for the track.[7] As it was nearing completion by February 2006, Jackson left 2 Seas Records in the following months, causing the entire project to be completely scrapped.
Trivia[]
- 2 Seas Records initially announced the track as "From the Bottom of My Heart". This title was later reused for a completely different track Jackson worked on a couple years later.[8]
- Dr. Freeze is believed to have performed the backing vocals through the available instrumental.
- The U.S. Copyright Office also received a registration for a "Revised Version" from 2008, produced by Grammy Award nominated record producer K-R.O.K.[9][10] However, it's now known that this version wasn't recorded by Jackson, but rather, a tribute artist.[11]
