"Hot Fun in the Summertime" is an unreleased cover of the Sly & The Family song by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson most likely intended for the Invincible album.
Background[]
Jackson's rendition of "Hot Fun in the Summertime" was recorded between 1998-2003 at Marvin's Room. Judging by the time of events, it's very likely it could've been intended for the Invincible album he was working on at the time. According to John Branca, only a few lines were recorded.[1][2]
In 2014, it was confirmed the track was reworked for Xscape by the guitarist, Jesse Johnson, under a different title, which likely reads "Hot in the Summertime". It featured Mary J. Blige and D'Angelo on vocals alongside Jackson. Questlove had involvement in its production as well. "Hot Fun in the Summertime" was produced by D'Angelo and John McClain (executively), but the track was ultimately left off the album due to the incompleteness of Jackson's demo and how complicated it was to finish.
Trivia[]
- It's rumored to have also been worked on before, although this is unconfirmed.
