"Dream Away" was produced by Steve Porcaro, with him and Jackson co-writing the song. Porcaro previously worked on "Human Nature", in which "Dream Away" shares similarities. He also mentioned that "Dream Away" was recorded by Jackson during the Victory sessions, to be specific in November 1983, and that it was intended for the album.
Similarly to "Chicago 1945", Porcaro was asked about including the song on Xscape, although he didn't approve of it as he doesn't support the estate's "straight to remix" approach.
