"Don't Matter to Me" is a song by Drake released as the tenth track on the second disc of his album, Scorpion released on June 29, 2018. It serves as the twenty-second track off of the LP overall. The recording includes a posthumous feature from Michael Jackson, who provides his vocals for the chorus and backing vocals.

Background[]

The track was originally written and recorded by Michael and Paul Anka in 1980, under the title of "It Don't Matter to Me".[1] Not a lot is known about their demo, however it's most likely Jackson singing over the piano, similar to the other collaborations (them being "Love Never Felt so Good" and "This Is It" which at the time was originally titled "I Never Heard". It was intended for Anka's 1983 album, Walk a Fine Line, just like the other two collaborations, although, it was left off the album.

In 2018, the song was picked up by Drake. A whole new production was crafted with help from 40 and Nineteen85. Parts of Michael's original demo were featured, mainly the chorus. His vocals are also noticeably autotuned.

Controversy[]

While casual listeners mostly enjoyed "Don't Matter to Me", it was met with mixed reactions from Michael's fans around the world, the main reason being the autotune on his vocals. Even some of the Jackson family members had something to say.

I just feel like if he didn’t finish it, you shouldn’t use it.

–Austin Brown (son of Rebbie Jackson)[2]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Ayy, wild things you're doin' at night
Trips to wherever feels right
Doin' it all just to feel things
Drinking's enough of a vice
Drugs just aren't suiting you right
You were just fine as a real thing, thing

[Refrain]
You, you, you know
That's not the way to get over me
I don't know what you're sayin'
You, you, you know
That's not the way to get over me

[Pre-Chorus]
All of a sudden you say you don't want me no more
All of a sudden you say that I closed the door

[Chorus]
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me what you say
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me what you say

[Verse 2]
I can't recover from our last conversation
You called me weak
And you tested my manhood as we yelled at each other
You wanted me to gon' put my hands on you
Just to show you I love you
You know I can't jeopardize both our reputations
Despite what you say
Despite what you choose to do with yourself this summer
You're actin' out, you know you love to see me down
Stressin' over somethin' (Stressin' over somethin')

[Refrain]
You, you, you, you, you know
That's not the way to get over me
I don't know what you're sayin'
You, you, you know
That's not the way to get over me

[Pre-Chorus]
All of a sudden you say you don't want me no more
All of a sudden you say that I closed the door

[Chorus]
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me what you say
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me what you say

[Outro]
Girl, your love, you think you broke it
I'm leavin' you today, you broke my heart
Girl, your love, you think you broke it
I'm leavin' you today, you broke my heart
