"Blood on the Dance Floor" is a song by Michael Jackson released as the first track from the Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix album. It was released as a single on March 21, 1997, serving as the lead single from the album.
Background[]
The track started as an instrumental groove by Teddy Riley, and was one of several ideas demoed to present to Jackson and his team in February 1991 during the Dangerous sessions (others included "Remember the Time" and "In the Closet"). It was the first groove that was played from Riley's DAT, becoming an immediate favourite of theirs (especially Michael). Jackson later wrote the lyrics and melody, giving it the title "Blood on the Dance Floor" taken from a song title producer Bill Bottrell told him about.[1]
The track was very close to ending up on the track listing for the album , although it was ultimately left off of in the last minute. Riley reasoned that Michael felt it wasn't complete enough, missing vocal parts and so on.
Riley was a little disappointed however at Michael, that he finished “Blood on the Dance Floor” without him in January 1997, but "Michael [knew] what he want[ed], and he was happy with it".[2] According to Matt Forger, the original 1991 DAT with Riley's original instrumental groove was used for the rework, with the vocals being completely redone.[1]
Music video[]
"Blood on the Dance Floor" received a music video, directed by Vincent Paterson and released on March 28, 1997. In 2017 a second music video was released in support of the Scream compilation album.
Another few music videos would be conceived as well. At the time of its release, a remix of "Blood on the Dance Floor" dubbed "Tony Moran's Switchblade Remix" would get a music video as well, although it'd get scrapped in favor of Sony's choices. In 2017, yet another version would be made, this time with HD footage and clips of the Michael Jackson ONE cast.
Live performances[]
Jackson performed the track during the HIStory World Tour in 1997, making "Blood on the Dance Floor" the only song from the remix album to be ever performed live by The King of Pop. While doing so, the artist would wear a red suit, later switched to a sparkly, blue jacket. The outfits were not used for any other song on the setlist.

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
She got your number, ah
She know your game, ah
She put you under, ah
It's so insane, ah
Since you seduced her, ah
How does it feel? Ah
To know that woman, ah
Is out to kill
[Refrain]
Every night stance is like taking a chance
It's not about love and romance
And now, you're going to get it
Ah, every hot man is out taking a chance
It's not about love and romance
And now, you do regret it
[Pre-Chorus]
To escape the world, I've got to enjoy that simple dance
And it seemed that everything was on my side
(Blood on my side)
She seemed sincere like it was love and true romance
And now, she's out to get me
But I just can't take it
Just can't break it
[Chorus]
Susie got your number and Susie ain’t your friend
Look who took you under with seven inches in
Blood is on the dance floor, blood is on the knife
Susie got your number and Susie says it's right
[Verse 2]
She got your number, ah
How does it feel? Ah
To know this stranger, ah
Is about to kill, ah
She got yo' baby, ah
It happened fast, ah
If you could only, ah
Erase the past (Ah)
[Refrain]
Every night stance is like taking a chance (Ah)
It's not about love and romance
And now, you're going to get it
Ah, every hot man is out taking a chance
It's not about love and romance
And now, you do regret it
[Pre-Chorus]
To escape the world, I got to enjoy this simple dance
And it seemed that everything was on my side
(Blood on my side)
It seemed sincere like it was love and true romance
And now, she's out to get me
But I just can't take it
Just can't break it
[Chorus]
Susie got your number and Susie ain’t your friend
Look who took you under with seven inches in
Blood is on the dance floor, blood is on the knife
Susie got your number, you know Susie says it's right (Hoo-hoo)
[Chorus]
Susie got your number
Susie ain’t your friend (Ah, it's goin' down, baby)
Look who took you under, she put seven inches in
Blood is on the dance floor, blood is on the knife (It's goin' down, baby)
Susie got your number (Ah)
Susie says it's right
[Outro]
It was blood on the dance floor
(Blood on the dance floor)
It was blood on the dance floor
(Blood on the dance floor)
It was blood on the dance floor
(Blood on the dance floor)
It was blood on the dance floor
(Blood on the dance floor)
And I just can't take it
The girl won't break it
Hoo!
