"Blood on the Dance Floor" is a song written and produced by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson, released as the first track from the Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix album. It was released as a single on March 21, 1997, serving as the lead single from the album.

Background[]

The backing track was demoed by Teddy Riley and was one of several other ideas at Soundtrack Studios to present to Jackson and his team in 1991 for Dangerous.[1] This soon became a favorite of theirs (especially Jackson), and Jackson later wrote the lyrics and melody, making it "Blood on the Dance Floor". The track was considered to be on the track listing, but it was ultimately left off. Riley reasoned that Jackson felt it wasn't complete enough, missing vocal parts and so on.

"Blood on the Dance Floor" was revisited in 1997 at Mountain Studios. According to Matt Forger, the original 1991 DAT with Riley's original instrumental groove was used for the rework.[2] Riley was a little upset, however, that Jackson didn't call him to "vacuum clean this old master", but "Michael [knew] what he want[ed], and he was happy with it".[3]

Music video[]

"Blood on the Dance Floor" received a music video, directed by Vincent Paterson and released on March 28, 1997. In 2017 a second music video was released supporting the Scream compilation album.

Another few music videos would be conceived as well. At the time of its release, a remix of "Blood on the Dance Floor" dubbed "Tony Moran's Switchblade Remix" would get a music video as well, although it'd get scrapped in favor of Sony's choices. In 2017, yet another version would be made, this time with HD footage and clips of the Michael Jackson ONE cast.

Live performances[]

Jackson performed "Blood on the Dance Floor" during the HIStory World Tour in 1997, making it the only song from the remix album to be ever performed live by Jackson. While doing so, the artist would wear a red suit, later switched to a sparkly, blue jacket. The outfits weren't used for any other song on the setlist.
